Crossroads Community
Services, in partnership with the
SPCA of Texas, launched the Pet-O-Meals Project on Thursday,
January 18. The program is designed to ensure
that the nutritional needs of “all members” of
the family are met.
“The face of poverty is
changing so we are seeing a lot more client
families who own pets,” said Rev. Jay Cole, CCS
director. “It stands to reason that if the
family is suffering, the pet is suffering, too.”
To ease that stress, each
family will be given enough food to feed a pet
for at least a week. Clients pick up the food
once a month. According to Gina Alcala, outreach
director for the SPCA, this will be a big help
to those well-intentioned families who may be
hurting their pet without knowing it.
“If the family cannot afford
to buy real pet food, they may think that
feeding the dog ‘people food’ is all right,”
Alcala said. “They may not realize that this is
hurting the animal's digestive system.”
